Amazon Duplicate ASIN Creation Warnings Rise: Beware These Three Practices

It is not just about creating a new listing

Recently, multiple “duplicate ASIN creation” reports have appeared in seller forums and industry communities. Some sellers said their accounts received performance warnings, certain Listings were deactivated, or ASIN creation permissions were affected.

These cases show catalog compliance risks still exist. As of writing, Amazon has not issued a public announcement about a “targeted account sweep” or “centralized review of three ASIN types.” Penalty reasons should be based on the seller’s performance notification and Account Health page.

Some sellers do not understand why changing images, titles, and copy on an old listing is linked to duplicate creation. The key is not how new the page looks, but whether the product itself has changed enough to establish a new catalog identity.

In Amazon’s catalog, an ASIN corresponds to a specific product; an SKU is mainly for internal inventory management. Official rules require that if a product already exists in the catalog, you should add an offer to the existing ASIN instead of creating a duplicate detail page.

Updating images and copy is not itself a violation. Sellers may maintain detail pages to describe the original product more accurately. The problem is when there is no material change, but a new listing is created by changing images, packaging, SKU, or product codes.

When a product does change, follow catalog rules

If there are real differences in color, size, material, function, model, or version, you may need to create a new child ASIN or detail page and set up relationships according to the category’s variation theme. Adjusting packaging and marketing copy alone cannot replace proof of product differences.

Based on current materials and policies, the risk is concentrated not in a single action, but in the combination of duplicate creation, Vine benefits, and variation relationships. The following three actions deserve priority self-review.

Type 1: Enrolling multiple duplicate ASINs in Vine separately, then merging reviews

Amazon Vine rules strictly limit enrollments within an ASIN’s lifecycle and variant enrollments. If the same product is split into multiple duplicate ASINs to obtain Vine resources separately, then reviews are aggregated through variation relationships, this may violate rules on duplicate detail pages, Vine use, and review manipulation.

Type 2: Improperly splitting or merging variations

Official review policies prohibit creating variation relationships to gather reviews, manipulate reviews, or raise star ratings. Placing products that are not true variations under the same parent, or repeatedly splitting and merging to change review display, may affect listings, ASIN creation permissions, or selling permissions.

Type 3: Product unchanged, old inventory using a new ASIN

If the original product remains the same model, functions, and specifications, but existing inventory is moved to a newly created ASIN for sale, duplicate detail pages can result. Whether the goal is to relaunch, handle historical reviews, or gain new-product traffic, product identity rules do not change.

After receiving a performance notification, do not only “delete the listing and deny everything.” Save the notification content, involved ASINs, creation and modification timeline, uploaded files, and team records. Then determine whether it is an actual violation or a false positive.

If duplicate creation actually exists

Sort out the main ASIN and redundant links as required by the performance notification, stop selling on duplicate pages, correct incorrect variation relationships, and truthfully explain Vine or review attribution operations. The appeal should focus on root cause, completed corrective actions, and prevention processes.

If products have real differences and were misjudged

In a false positive, do not falsely admit violations just to pass review. Sellers can prepare purchase invoices, product photos, manuals, model and parameter comparisons, UPC or GTIN authorization, and other materials to explain real differences in hardware, function, model, material, or core specifications.

Determine the facts first, then choose correction or evidence submission (original illustration)

More effective than an appeal is checking the catalog before listing new products. Sellers can include these items in routine approval:

  • Check the catalog first: search existing products by brand, model, UPC, EAN, or GTIN. If the same product already exists, add an offer to the existing ASIN first;

  • Assess differences: record differences in function, material, model, size, and version, then decide whether to create a new detail page, build compliant variations, or keep the original ASIN;

  • Restrict variation permissions: parent-child splitting, merging, and bulk uploads should be reviewed by designated personnel; do not use variation relationships to adjust review display;

  • Review Vine separately: check ASIN lifecycle, variation eligibility, and past enrollment to avoid repeated use of program benefits for the same product;

  • Keep evidence: save product versions, purchase credentials, authorization documents, and every catalog adjustment record so the complete timeline can be restored if misjudged.

A listing refresh looks like an operational move, but in the backend it may affect product catalog, review policy, Vine eligibility, and new-product benefits. If the product has not changed, do not start over with a new ASIN; if it has genuinely changed, build relationships by category rules and keep complete evidence.

Seller Home Review

Amazon is tightening enforcement against duplicate ASIN creation, and performance warnings and listing deactivations are already occurring. Sellers should immediately self-review high-risk actions such as variation merging, listing refresh, and multi-store distribution to avoid permanent restrictions on ASIN creation permissions.
