AMZ123 has learned that recently, Amazon announced that its Prime Air drone delivery service will be launched in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA in the summer of 2026. After the service is launched, users can receive goods within about 1 to 2 hours after placing an order, realizing a faster "last mile" delivery experience.
According to the introduction, Prime Air will use fully automatic drones to perform delivery tasks. These drones can fly at an altitude of more than 200 feet and a speed of more than 70 miles per hour.
When users place an order, they only need to select eligible products and choose the drone delivery option during checkout, just like the usual online shopping process. They can track the delivery progress in real time through the website or application. The deliverable products must meet the requirements of being about the size of a shoebox and weighing no more than 5 pounds. Currently, Amazon can provide more than 60,000 eligible products.
In terms of specific operations, Amazon will deploy 12 to 20 drones in a new facility near the Cortana warehouse to perform order deliveries. However, the coverage of this service is limited and only available to users within 7.5 miles of the facility.
Amazon said that Baton Rouge was chosen as the new pilot city mainly because the local area has a mature operational foundation, suitable weather conditions, and acceptance of innovative technologies.
Amazon believes that this service can meet users' needs for ultra-fast delivery, especially in emergency situations. For example, when a family urgently needs daily necessities such as children's medicine, it can be delivered within two hours without going out.
From a regional impact perspective, the local economic organization Greater Baton Rouge Economic Partnership believes that drone delivery is expected to reduce residents' needs for shopping outside, thereby reducing road traffic pressure and having a positive impact on the regional traffic environment. At the same time, the project is also considered to help promote the development of local technology applications and create job opportunities.
In terms of safety and regulation, this service has obtained flight permission from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Amazon said that its drones are equipped with sensor and camera systems, which can avoid other aircraft in busy airspace in real time and automatically adjust flight paths to ensure the safe completion of the delivery process.
At present, Prime Air has been operating in multiple American cities, including San Antonio, Waco, Dallas, Phoenix, Detroit, Tampa, and Kansas City. With the addition of Baton Rouge, Amazon's drone delivery network has been further expanded.
