According to media reports, Apple is making a crucial adjustment to its artificial intelligence strategy. On one hand, Apple is preparing to open Siri to external AI assistants in the upcoming iOS 27 operating system update as part of a comprehensive upgrade for Siri.
Currently, Siri can access ChatGPT through a collaboration with OpenAI, but in the future, Apple will allow other competing services to achieve the same access. Apple is developing new tools that will enable AI chatbot applications installed through the App Store to integrate with the Siri assistant.
On the other hand, Apple this week issued rare special bonuses to iPhone hardware designers to prevent them from moving to AI companies like OpenAI that are developing their own devices. According to insiders, Apple has given many members of the iPhone product design team extra bonuses, amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars, paid in stock that will vest gradually over four years. These bonuses are in addition to regular bonuses and, in many cases, are worth about $200,000 to $400,000 over the entire vesting period.
This move demonstrates the urgency for Apple to re-establish its competitive position in the AI wave, as well as the intense competition for talent among tech giants.
