1 TikTok Launches a Dedicated Section for Short Dramas

Previously, TikTok short dramas often paused at the most exciting moment and sent viewers to an external app. Now, TikTok wants to keep users on the platform.

Recently, TikTok’s web version added a standalone “Short Dramas” entry. Users can filter content by backgrounds such as fantasy, workplace, werewolf and wealthy family, as well as plots such as revenge, betrayal, marriage and rebirth.

In addition, the page includes hot rankings for the last 7 days and 30 days and retains users’ viewing history. In short, short dramas are no longer content randomly encountered in the feed, but have become an independent category that users can actively search and watch continuously.

The dedicated short drama entry is not a sudden new feature. Before this, TikTok had already pushed forward several short drama initiatives, from content production, standalone apps, in-app playback to advertising.

In April this year, TikTok partnered with U.S. production company HOORAE to launch the vertical short drama “Screen Time”, which received nearly 75 million views in its first week. In July, the Korean short drama “In The Name Of Beauty” premiered exclusively on TikTok, and by August 20 it had surpassed 500 million views.

Beyond direct participation in production, TikTok also launched its official short drama app PineDrama. Users can log in with their TikTok accounts, browse a standalone drama library, select episodes and watch continuously, while viewing history and some account information sync with TikTok.

In June this year, TikTok introduced Mini Center, Drama Center and Growth Max. Short drama companies can release full episodes directly on TikTok, earn revenue through paid unlocks or ads, and use advertising tools to reach more viewers.

Among them, Mini Center has entered ten markets including the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia and Thailand, while Drama Center is available globally.

In July, TikTok added the Mini Drama Feed ad placement. Official materials show that in eligible markets such as Japan and Indonesia, some users can see a “Mini Drama” tag near the feed and directly enter the short drama content page.

From co-producing content and launching PineDrama, to opening in-app playback, paid unlocks and ad monetization, and now a dedicated short drama entry, TikTok’s short drama layout now covers content, product and commercialization.

2 Short Drama Globalization Enters a Platform War

TikTok’s deeper move into short dramas is tied to the market’s continued rapid growth.

Sensor Tower data shows that in Q1 2026, global short drama app downloads exceeded 850 million, up 140% year over year. Southeast Asia, Latin America and India together contributed more than three-quarters of downloads, and short dramas are forming independent user and payment demand in more countries.

Short dramas are worth fighting for also because they are taking up more and more user time.

Omdia data shows that global micro-short drama revenue reached US$11 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow to US$14 billion in 2026. In the U.S., ReelShort users spend an average of 35.7 minutes per day, higher than Netflix’s 24.8 minutes, Amazon Prime Video’s 26.9 minutes and Disney+’s 23 minutes.

This explains why more content platforms are entering the field. U.S. streaming platform Peacock has launched a short drama section, and Fox has invested in vertical content platform Holywater and plans to release hundreds of related works.

A short drama market originally driven by standalone apps such as ReelShort and DramaBox is now facing more competition from social media and traditional film and TV companies.

For Chinese short drama companies, TikTok provides an easier path into overseas markets. Companies can reduce the barriers of app development and user redirection.

However, operating inside the platform also creates new dependence. How much traffic short dramas receive, which content can go online, and how revenue is shared are all affected by platform rules. Accounts, viewing data and payment relationships also mainly remain inside TikTok.

In short, TikTok separating short dramas from the feed means global short drama competition is expanding from a user acquisition war between apps to a fight among platforms over content, users and payment entry points.

For Chinese short drama companies, the new entry can save one redirect but cannot eliminate competition in content, localization and business models. The next hit may appear faster, but the final question is who can truly turn views into long-term revenue.

TikTok’s short drama entry further tightens its traffic loop and squeezes external traffic diversion. Cross-border sellers involved in content commerce should prioritize testing short drama placements and branded custom dramas to seize this high-engagement user dividend.
