According to Lloyd's List, after the Panamanian government revoked the operation rights of the company under Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa at the ports on both ends of the Panama Canal, China has taken countermeasures. Data shows that within just five days from March 8th to 12th, Chinese ports detained a total of 28 Panamanian-flagged ships, accounting for 75.7% of all the ships detained during the same period, which is far higher than the historical average level.
This incident has been interpreted by the industry as the geopolitical continuation of the "Hutchison Whampoa Ports Incident". Previously, COSCO SHIPPING had announced the suspension of operations at the Port of Balboa in Panama.
Some analysts point out that if the dispute between the two countries continues to escalate, Panama may take retaliatory measures to restrict the passage of Chinese-flagged ships through the Panama Canal, which will have a significant impact on the global shipping network. People in the industry believe that
China may strengthen inspections on some flawed Panamanian-flagged ships through port state control, but the impact on shipping companies with higher management levels will be limited.
