AMZ123 has learned that Shopify recently announced that browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases on Shopify merchants’ independent websites. This means AI agents no longer just help consumers search for products, select items, and add them to the cart; after obtaining consumer authorization, they can also continue to operate the checkout page and submit orders.
This change also puts Shopify on a different course from some platforms that are restricting AI from shopping on behalf of consumers. Retail platforms such as Amazon had already begun limiting AI agents from completing purchases on behalf of users, while Shopify chose to further open the checkout process on its merchant websites, hoping to allow AI agents to participate more fully in e-commerce transaction flows.
Shopify had already provided WebMCP support for its merchant websites and shopping carts. With this capability, browser-based AI agents can view product inventory from Shopify merchants, search for products, and add items to the cart. However, after completing these actions, AI agents still had to rely on traditional methods to continue checkout.
Now Shopify has further opened WebMCP’s checkout capabilities, including Shop Pay, allowing AI agents to directly read the checkout page, modify relevant information, and submit transactions after consumer authorization.
Shopify added three tools: get checkout, update checkout, and complete checkout. Get checkout allows AI agents to view current checkout information; update checkout allows agents to modify information such as the consumer’s address and delivery method; complete checkout is responsible for submitting the order and completing the purchase after consumer authorization.
For example, when a consumer asks an AI agent to buy a product, the AI can first complete product search and add the item to the cart, then read the current checkout information, adjust the shipping address or delivery options according to the consumer’s request, and finally submit the order. However, final completion of the transaction still requires buyer authorization; AI agents cannot make payments on their own without consumer confirmation.
Shopify said this feature is gradually being rolled out to all eligible Shopify merchants. Compared with past methods that relied on screenshot recognition or scraping webpage content, WebMCP can directly provide structured tools, allowing AI agents to read and modify checkout information more accurately.
Shopify has now deployed AI agent capabilities on both server-side and browser-side. The company previously provided a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, enabling AI agents to interact with Shopify systems through the server.
The newly opened WebMCP mainly targets AI agents running directly in consumers’ browsers. Both approaches are built on Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).
UCP provides AI agents with a unified set of e-commerce operations, covering product search and discovery, cart creation, and checkout. Shopify hopes that through unified protocols and structured tools, different types of AI agents can connect more smoothly to merchants’ product and transaction systems, rather than having to rely on clicking web pages and reading page content like human users.
Currently, Shopify has established agentic commerce partnerships with multiple AI agents. Meta’s Muse and Instinct have both established direct cooperation with Shopify; the Instinct-Shopify collaboration was also announced on September 28.
As more AI agents connect to Shopify, consumers may in the future only need to tell AI their shopping needs, and AI will complete more steps such as product search, comparison, adding to cart, and checkout.

Seller Home Review
Shopify’s opening of AI agent checkout essentially gives sellers an additional AI-driven conversion channel, creating a traffic divergence from Amazon’s block. Sellers are advised to check whether their product and checkout configurations are compatible as soon as possible and seize the new AI shopping entry point.
