Amazon Prime Day 2026's first-day sales reached a historic high, with consumers spending far more than expected during the 48-hour promotional event. According to data from Adobe Analytics, total online spending in the United States on the first day of the event reached $14.2 billion, a 11.2% increase from the same period last year.
Electronics, clothing, and home goods were the most popular categories. Among them, electronics sales increased by 12.5% year-on-year, and clothing sales increased by 9.8%. Consumers responded positively to the discount intensity, with an average discount rate of 38%, higher than last year's 35%.
Vivek Pandya, chief analyst at Adobe Digital Insights, said: "The opening performance of Prime Day 2026 exceeded expectations, with consumers still actively seeking discounted items under inflationary pressures. High discount rates and a rich selection of categories drove sales growth."
Amazon has not yet announced official sales data, but third-party research institutions predict that Amazon's global sales during the entire Prime Day event are expected to exceed $20 billion. In addition, competitors such as Walmart and Target also launched promotional activities simultaneously, further driving the growth of overall online retail sales.
Seller's Home Review
The $14.2 billion in sales and 11.2% increase on the first day of Prime Day 2026 confirm consumer resilience. Sellers should focus on hot-selling categories such as electronics and clothing, use a high discount rate of 38% to grab traffic, and plan inventory and advertising strategies for the peak season in advance.
