Shipping Giants Take Emergency Measures

Global Route Restructuring

Faced with the sudden geopolitical crisis, major global shipping companies quickly responded and adjusted their routes to avoid risks:

  • Hapag-Lloyd: On March 1, it announced that due to the security blockade, all ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz were suspended until further notice. The company stated that it is closely monitoring the situation. As a result, services calling at ports in the Arabian Gulf will face delays, diversions or schedule adjustments.

  • CMA CGM: As early as February 28, it instructed all ships located in and heading to the Persian Gulf to immediately sail to safe waters for shelter. At the same time, CMA CGM announced the suspension of the Suez Canal passage, and related ships will be diverted around the Cape of Good Hope.

Maersk: Also announced on the 28th that it will divert some flights of its ME11 and MECL routes from the Suez Canal to the Cape of Good Hope, citing unforeseen restrictions brought about by the operating environment in the Red Sea region.

  • Japanese Shipping Giants: NYK Line temporarily stopped ships from passing through the Strait of Hormuz; K Line ordered ships in the Persian Gulf to stand by; MOL asked ships to wait in safe waters.

  • Greek Ministry of Shipping: Issued the highest level of alert to ships flying the Greek flag, clearly advising against entering the Persian Gulf, Oman Bay and the Strait of Hormuz, and recommending the implementation of the highest security measures at Israeli ports.

Maritime Traffic Stagnation

Hundred Ships Stranded

According to data from maritime intelligence agency Skytek, at the time of the blockade, there were still more than 100 container ships, 450 tankers and 200 bulk carriers in the Strait of Hormuz. Real-time traffic monitoring shows that currently only one-way traffic is maintained in the direction of the Persian Gulf, and no new ships have entered the Strait.

Data from TankerTrackers.com further pointed out that there are currently 55 tankers stranded in Iranian waters, including 18 fully loaded crude oil tankers.

Maritime security company Vanguard warned that under the current situation, the risk of misjudgment between warships and merchant ships has significantly increased, and ships associated with the United States or Israel are more likely to become targets of attack. The Baltic International Maritime Council (BIMCO) also issued a similar warning.

Affected by this, the insurance market reacted violently. The Financial Times reported that insurers are canceling existing contracts or significantly increasing marine premiums for ships passing through the Middle East to cover rapidly increasing risks.
