China's port throughput declines 16.92% week on week
AMZ123 Cross-border Newsletter2026-8-14

AMZ123 has learned that logistics data released by the Ministry of Transport for August 3–9 shows railway freight volume reached 77.051 million tons, up 0.59% week-on-week; expressway truck traffic was 52.864 million vehicles, down 0.54% week-on-week; port cargo throughput was 235.132 million tons, down 16.92% week-on-week; and container throughput was 6.267 million TEUs, down 9.04% week-on-week, presenting an overall divergence of "stable land transport and declining ports."

The sharp decline in port data was mainly caused by Typhoons "Dolphin" and "Chan-hom" successively affecting the East and South China port clusters, compounded by spillover effects from the earlier Panama Canal congestion, disrupting the pace of port cargo collection and distribution.

For cross-border sellers, attention should be paid to the risk of "hidden delays" caused by the lagging recovery of port operations. Even after the typhoon impact ends, issues such as high yard loads and vessel schedule adjustments may persist for 1–2 weeks. For Asia-Europe and Asia-America route replenishment, "port congestion premium + weekly vessel schedule buffer" should be included in delivery time assessments. Time-sensitive shipments may prioritize rail or air freight diversion to reduce logistics delay risks caused by terminal congestion at ports.

Seller Home Review

Port throughput dropped sharply by 16.92% week-on-week. Sellers should watch for logistics delays caused by the typhoon season and Panama Canal congestion. It is advisable to closely monitor port developments, adjust shipping plans in advance, and switch to land transport or alternative routes if necessary to reduce supply chain disruption risks before the peak season.
